CENTRAL Visayas has reported 15,394 dengue cases as of August 17, this year, marking a significant increase from the 7,132 cases reported in June.

The outbreak has also resulted in 35 deaths across the region.

Bohol leads with 5,165 cases, followed by Cebu Province with 4,592 cases, followed by , and Negros Oriental with 2,689 cases. Siquijor has reported 637 cases but no fatalities.

Additionally, Urban areas are also affected with Cebu City has 1,360 cases and three deaths, while Mandaue City has 437 cases and one death. Lapu-Lapu City has 504 cases with no recorded fatalities.

Dr. Eugenia Mercedes Caรฑal, regional epidemiologist for DOH 7, detailed the classifications of dengue cases: 8,839 confirmed, 5,105 probable, and 4,450 suspected.

Suspected cases are individuals with acute fever from dengue-prone areas; probable cases include additional indicators such as IgM antibodies; and confirmed cases are those with positive RT-PCR tests or viral isolation.

Caรฑal emphasized the importance of preventive measures, recommending enhanced immunity, cleanliness, and adherence to the '4S' strategy.

This includes searching and destroying mosquito breeding sites, securing self-protection, seeking early medical consultation, and supporting fogging in areas with high case counts.

Meanwhile, in an earlier interview, Dr. Ronald Jarvik Buscato of DOH 7 also highlighted the need to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and use insect repellents. He suggested fogging in heavily affected areas and thorough cleanup in less impacted regions.

Effective intervention and preventive measures are crucial to managing the outbreak and mitigating further spread of dengue.(MyTVCebu)
