TWO athletes died while competing at the World Triathlon Championships in Torremolinos, Spain, on Thursday.

The fatalities, one from Mexico and one from Great Britain, were participating in the sprint category on the first day of the event.

In a statement published on its Facebook page, World Triathlon expressed its profound sorrow over the incident.

“Our deepest condolences go to their respective family, friends, National Federations and all the triathlon family. World Triathlon, the Spanish Federation and the LOC are in contact with their families and NFs to provide all the support needed in these difficult and sad times,” the organization said.

The Mexican Triathlon Federation identified one of the victims as 79-year-old Roger Mas Colomer.

In a statement, the federation also expressed its grief and extended their condolences to the family and friends of the athlete.

British Triathlon also confirmed the death of one of its Age-Group team members, though they did not disclose the athlete's identity.

The organization indicated that the family had been notified and emphasized the importance of respecting their privacy.

The cause of death for both athletes has not been disclosed.

The Age-Group category is designed for non-professional triathletes who compete against others within five-year age bands.

Competitors in this category are recognized as “World Triathletes.”

Each Age-Group event includes a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride, and a 5km run.

The World Triathlon Championships in Torremolinos has attracted over 5,500 athletes, with more than 4,000 participating in the Age-Group races from 79 different countries.

The championships began with the Under-23 Finals on Thursday and will culminate on Sunday with the Elite Men’s Finals.(CMM)
