CLOSE to 500 kilos of garbage was collected during a coastal cleanup in Barangay Bato, Toledo City, on Friday morning, September 20
Drawing at least 200 participants, the activity involved both coastal trash collection and underwater diving around the protected Tañon Strait.
Personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and local government unit of Toledo participated in the event, which was organized by the Therma Visayas, Inc., a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power.
The company's Vice President for Facilities Visayas, Noel Cabahug, highlighted the collaboration with other groups.
Cabahug said that the event, dubbed "Scubasurero and Coastal Clean Up," is in its third year for diving cleanups, while coastal cleanups are held monthly.
“Our objective is to promote responsibility within the community, especially for the sea, while also raising awareness,” he said.
The cleanup aligned with World Coastal Cleanup Day, which falls on September 21.
Myca, one of the divers, shared that although she has been freediving for several years, she joined the activity to support a cause through her hobby.
The organizers reported that after more than two hours of cleanup, from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., participants collected 495 kilos of garbage, of which 475 kilos from the coastline and 20 kilos from underwater.
They added most of the trash collected was household materials like used clothing and rags, while fewer natural items, such as tree trunks, were retrieved.(MyTVCebu)
