THE Philippine National Police (PNP) has recommended additional criminal charges, including homicide and reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, against former Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin and eight other individuals.

The new legal actions stem from the tragic June 8 drowning of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

These charges were formally referred to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for evaluation and case build-up.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) stated that the recommendation is based on the existence of a duty of care held by the respondents, a failure to exercise necessary due diligence in a known dangerous situation, and specific negligent acts or omissions that directly led to the deaths.

According to reports from the Philippine News Agency and Inquirer.net, investigators established a clear causal link between this negligence and the fatal incident, asserting that the organizers failed to provide the necessary safety precautions required for such activities.

This latest development follows the CIDG's recommendation last week to charge Baldwin and 10 members of his staff—including coaches, team managers, and medical personnel—for violating Republic Act No. 11053, or the Anti-Hazing Act.

The tragic event, which occurred during a team-building activity at a beach resort in Aurora, has prompted a wide-ranging investigation into the safety protocols of school-sanctioned training programs.

In the wake of the incident, Baldwin resigned from his position at Ateneo, and the university has expressed its commitment to cooperating with authorities.

Beyond the criminal complaints, Baldwin has also faced government scrutiny regarding his professional documentation and work permits. (Jane Michelle Buenaventura, PIT Comm Intern)
