HAIDILAO, one of China's largest hotpot chains, pledged compensation after a viral video showed a customer urinating into a hotpot broth.
A video from last month shows a man standing on a table at a Shanghai Haidilao, urinating into a boiling hotpot. The incident happened on February 24, but the restaurant learned about it four days later.
Haidilao, known for its service and broth, has expanded beyond China with outlets in the US, Japan, and the UK.
The case exposed inadequate training protocols, resulting in staff being unable to identify the situation in a timely manner.
The restaurant apologized to its customers because of the incident. Although no amount was mentioned, the restaurant promised compensation to its customers.
"We fully understand that the distress caused to our customers by this incident cannot be fully compensated for by any means, but we will do our utmost to take responsibility," the company said in a statement per a report by CNN.
The company promised to cooperate with authorities and enhance staff training on food safety.
