THEY did not get the start they wanted when they dropped their opening assignment. It turned out that was just a minor hiccup to start the season as the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles have been humming as of late.

The defending champions Magis Eagles continued to sizzle, pocketing their fourth straight victory with an 88-63 dismantling of the listless University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors in the secondary division of the 24th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, October 15, at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Magis Eagles started their back-to-back title bid with a shock 71-75 loss to the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars. Ateneo was able to regroup after that faulty start, racking one win after another for a solid 4-1 (win-loss) record.

The hot streak allowed Ateneo to tie USJ-R at third spot in the team standings, trailing the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters and Cebu Eastern College Dragons, who are 5-0 and 5-1 respectively.

Up next for Ateneo is a gigantic showdown with CEC on Sunday in a match that will have a huge implication in the race to the top.

Alden Paul Cainglet paced Ateneoโ€™s recent win with 15 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Jelo Mar Rota added 14 markers, two steals, and two assists while Lars Fjellvang had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Froilan Maglasang and Coriantumr Cabantog pitched in 12 and 11 points in a super balanced attack by the Magis Eagles.

Xian Garcia fired a game-high 22 points but still couldnโ€™t help the Baby Warriors end a long drought as they remained winless after five games.(CCM)
