SEVERAL Cebuano supporters in Cordova town, Cebu are planning to celebrate the 80th birthday of former President Rodrigo Duterte on March 28.
Organizers have asked Cordova Mayor Cesar Suan for permission to hold the gathering from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at a vacant lot along Centennial Road.
In a letter posted on the Cordovanhon Kami Facebook page, organizers described the event as a peaceful assembly meant to express gratitude for Duterte, who is currently detained in The Hague, Netherlands following his arrest by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“We anticipate a gathering of approximately thousands of participants, who will be encouraged to maintain a peaceful and respectful demeanor throughout the event,” the letter stated.
The request was signed by Cheztose Meevissen, Jerry Baguio, Denis Degamo, Christopher Acebes, Mary Pian Caresse, and Ireneo Menguito.
Organizers said the gathering aims to show solidarity with Duterte on his birthday, promote peace and unity among Cordova residents, and provide a platform for individuals to express their views respectfully.
They assured local officials that they will implement necessary safety and security measures and will coordinate with law enforcement and emergency services to ensure order and compliance with public gathering regulations.
As of now, Cordova authorities have yet to respond to the request.
Meanwhile, in Cebu City, Duterte supporters held consecutive prayer rallies on March 12, 2025, following news of the ICC warrant. Many participants were from marginalized sectors.
Lt. Col. Maria Theresa Macatangay, deputy city director for operations of the Cebu City Police Office, said the gatherings at Plaza Independencia and a subsequent motorcade organized by local rider groups proceeded without incident.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Duterte on March 11, in connection with alleged crimes against humanity linked to the thousands of deaths during his administration’s war on drugs.
The court cited evidence pointing to extrajudicial killings that targeted suspected drug offenders, raising concerns about human rights violations.
