Cebu Archdiocese calls for support for anti-corruption rally

CORRUPTION is being called out once again through church pulpits and public spaces as the Archdiocese of Cebu prepares a citywide White Ribbon observance on June 28.

This will happen alongside a nationwide anti-corruption march in Metro Manila.

The Archdiocese of Cebu has urged the faithful to take part in the White Ribbon Movement during Sunday Mass, encouraging Catholics to wear white clothing or pin white ribbons as a public expression of support for integrity and good governance.

In a statement on Tuesday, June 23, Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy called on families, schools, workplaces, and institutions to display white ribbons in homes, vehicles, offices, and churches as a visible sign of commitment to transparency and accountability.

This is in line with initiatives endorsed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

He said the white ribbon represents a call for moral renewal and honest public service.

“The white ribbon symbolizes our hope for a nation free from corruption and dishonesty,” he said.

He added that it also reflects a call for accountability in public office, responsible stewardship of public funds, and the pursuit of justice for the common good.

Uy stressed that reform must begin within individuals, not only institutions, as he urged the faithful to reflect on personal responsibility and moral conduct.

He also called on the public to sustain vigilance, urging continued resistance to misinformation and corruption while promoting accountability in daily life.

He further encouraged continued prayer for national renewal and ethical leadership.

In Cebu, parishes are expected to integrate the white ribbon observance into Sunday Mass, with church leaders framing it as both a spiritual and civic appeal.

At the national level, religious leaders and civil society groups will stage the “White Ribbon March” at the EDSA People Power Monument on June 28.

The coalition behind the gathering said the event will push for anti-corruption reforms, political accountability, and changes in the electoral system, and is expected to draw thousands of participants.

Organizers said the movement continues earlier nationwide mobilizations against corruption and aims to broaden participation across religious and civic sectors.

Civil society groups supporting the march also called for stronger safeguards on political financing and improved representation in governance reforms.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police said it will implement full security measures for the White Ribbon Movement rally.

The gathering is expected to draw about 10,000 participants and will call for electoral reforms, government accountability, and stronger action against corruption and political dynasties.(MyTVCebu)
