AN OPPORTUNITY to contend for a world title again may come earlier than expected for Boholano boxer Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo.

Magsayo may be tapped to take on reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, who is scheduled to face Lamont Roach on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York

But Brendan Gibbons, son of Viva Promotions’ top honcho Sean Gibbons, said the Davis-Roach clash may not push through and Magsayo will instead take on Davis.

“Former WBC Champion Mark Magnifico Magsayo of MP Promotions has been revealed as a potential replacement opponent of Gervonta Davis,” Viva Promotions said in a social media post.

The possibility of facing Davis could be the biggest fight of Magsayo’s career and it is certainly going to be an uphill climb for the Tagbilaran City native boxer.

The hard-punching Davis is still undefeated in 30 fights with 28 of those victories coming by way of knockout.

Ranked No. 2 in the junior lightweight division, the 29-year-old Magsayo is actually on the brink of fighting for a world title as he is tipped to take on Mexico’s Eduardo Hernandez in a world title eliminator clash.

Winner in that fight will face reigning champion O’Shaquie Foster.

Magsayo, who holds a 27W-2L, 18KOs record, is the former World Boxing Council (WBC) world featherweight champion. He is on a three-fight winning streak that boosted his quest for redemption after losing his world title belt.(CCM)
