Boholano Magsayo eyes 5th straight win against American foe

MARK Magsayo, the fighting pride of Tagbilaran City, Bohol, will be putting his winning streak on line when he slugs it out with American Andres Cortes on Sunday (Philippine time), Sept. 13.

The Magsayo-Cortes duel is the undercard of the Ryan Garcia-Conor Benn clash at the T-Mobile Arena.

Coming off a fifth-round technical knockout victory against Feargal McRory, Magsayo, a former featherweight champion, is on a five-fight winning streak.

The 31-year-old Magsayo posted a string of wins after suffering back-to-back losses against Rey Vargas and Brandon Figueroa in July 2022 and March 2023, respectively.

Cortes is coming in with a perfect record, but Magsayo believes he is the better fighter.

“I have the advantage of experience and I fight the good fights. Elite fighters like Julio Ceja, Garry Russell Jr. I've fought a good set of fights. I'm better than him, I'm stronger than him,” Magsayo said in a pre-fight press conference.

Magsayo has 29 wins, 19 by knockout, with only two defeats.

The 25-year-old Cortes is off to an impressive pro career start, winning his first 25 fights. More than half of his victories came via stoppage as he has already racked up 13 KO victories.(CCM)
