FOR the millions of Filipino billiards enthusiasts, it was a bittersweet moment.

Chezka Centeno advanced to the next round but it came at the expense of Rubilen Amit, prevailing in an all-Filipino duel that brightened her title-retention bid in the 2025 Las Vegas Women’s Open at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Nevada early Friday (Philippine time), February 28.

Centeno defeated Amit, 4-3, 4-2, to advance to the Last 16 of the cash-rich tournament.

With the victory, Centeno is now in waiting mode as her opponent in the Last 16 is yet to be determined.

Centeno and Amit could still face each other in the later stages as the latter bounced from the loss with aplomb.

The Cebuano Amit kept her title hopes alive by venting her ire on Singaporean Silviana Lu, 4-1, 4-0, in the loser’s bracket.

Centeno is 3-0 in the 64-player tournament after previously beating American bets Nicolle Cuellar (4-0, 4-0), April Larson (4-1, 4-0).

Centeno and Amit had contrasting fates in the mixed doubles category.

Centeno and Mark Estiola made it to the quarterfinals after beating German partners Joshua and Pia Filler, 4-1, 4-2.

On the other hand, Amit and Django Bustamante lost to Fil-Canadian Alex Pagulayan and German Yvonne Hybler, 2-1.(CCM)
