THE leadership of the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu reaffirmed its commitment to strictly enforce the dress code policy as the 460th Fiesta Señor activities officially kicked off.

Fr. Andres Rivera Jr., OSA, rector of the Basilica, addressed the faithful during the Opening Salvo Mass on Thursday, January 9, explaining that the purpose of the dress code is to preserve the sanctity of the Basilica, especially as thousands of pilgrims begin to arrive.

Rivera stressed that the Basilica is a "sacred home" of the Santo Niño, a holy space where the faithful are invited to surrender to God's will, rather than focusing on fulfilling personal desires.

He responded to the concerns surrounding an incident in July 2024, when a trans woman was initially denied entry for wearing shorts and lacking identification.

Rivera clarified that the dress code aims to preserve the church's sacredness and solemnity, urging the faithful to approach their devotion to the Santo Niño with reverence and humility, not as a means to fulfill personal desires.

Addtionally, Rev. Fr. Jules Van Almerez, the Basilica's media liaison, also reminded both local and visiting pilgrims of the church's dress code in preparation for the Fiesta Señor and Sinulog.

He stressed that only those wearing appropriate attire would be allowed entry into the Basilica.

In October last year, the Basilica announced that they will strictly implement a set of dress code that requires proper clothing such as collared blouses with sleeves, knee-length or long dresses, and appropriate footwear, including closed shoes or sandals with straps for women.

The dress code prohibits items such as spaghetti straps, tank tops, shorts, and ripped jeans. Those who will violate are barred from entering the premises.

Almerez announced that, unlike in previous years, the Basilica Friars would no longer provide shawls for visitors, urging attendees to come prepared with the proper attire.

Additionally, he reminded pilgrims that only small chairs would be allowed during the novena masses, and large backpacks or luggage should be avoided to ensure an efficient bag-checking process.

“We encourage pilgrims to adhere to the dress code to ensure a respectful and solemn experience in this sacred space,” Almerez said.(MyTVCebu)
