EIGHTEEN typhoid fever cases have been recorded in Barangay Gunting, Barili, Cebu with all patients currently confined at the local infirmary.

This was confirmed by Barili Mayor John John Garcia, who shared findings from an investigation conducted by the Barili Primary Care Facility (PCF) Team.

The mayor disclosed on Monday, January 27, that two water sources in the area are being examined for possible links to the outbreak.

Belgian Spring, which has been identified as a drinking water source by the affected residents, is undergoing further water quality testing.

Another water source, originally marked with a “Not Safe dor Drinking” sign that is now missing, is also under review. A cow was reportedly spotted 60 meters from this secondary water source.

The mayor also disclosed that out of five households closest to the water source, one lacks a functional comfort room, while the others have working facilities.

The households are situated within a 100- to 112-meter radius from the inspected water sources.

To address the situation, Garcia said that the Barili PCF Team is distributing aqua tabs and chlorine to residents in the affected area.

“Right now, nag-house to house na ang Barili PCF Team para mag-distribute og mga aqua tabs ug chlorine sa mga naa sa affected area,” he added.

Belgian Spring will also be temporarily closed while further assessments are made to identify households relying on it for drinking water. Those identified will be provided with chlorinated water.

Residents will also receive hygiene and sanitation orientations to promote handwashing and cleanliness in their homes.

Garcia called on residents to ensure the cleanliness of their drinking water and households, emphasizing proper hygiene practices.

“Panghunaw kanunay, ilabi na ig human og gamit sa banyo,” he added, urging everyone to pray for the quick recovery of those affected and for no further cases to arise.

The local government continues to monitor the situation closely while implementing measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

Typhoid fever is a life-threatening illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi.

It spreads primarily through the ingestion of contaminated food or water and can lead to symptoms such as prolonged high fever, fatigue, abdominal pain, headache, nausea, and either constipation or diarrhea.

Without proper treatment, it can cause severe complications or death.

Preventive measures include access to safe drinking water, practicing proper hygiene, and maintaining sanitation. The World Health Organization and other health bodies also recommend vaccination, particularly for individuals in areas where typhoid fever is common.(MyTVCebu)
