CEBU City Vice Mayor Dondon Hontiveros admitted that calls for his resignation caught him by surprise, saying that he just took the position because the law required him to do so.

The matter was addressed by Hontiveros during a privilege speech at the City Council on November 13. He clarified that he took the vice mayor role on October 11 under legal advice following the dismissal of former Mayor Michael Rama for misconduct.

Despite online clamor for him to step down, he clarified he assumed the position since he is legally required, saying "I had reservations but followed due process."

In the middle of his speech, Hontiveros highlighted the crucial role of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in the transition.

The DILG issued a memorandum directing Hontiveros to assume the position as the top-ranking councilor, emphasizing the need to follow the constitutional process amid the sudden vacancy.

He reiterated that his appointment was based on legal guidance, refuting online speculation and calls for his resignation.

Hontiveros, known for his close political ties with Rama, had often been seen publicly supporting the former mayor, even during challenging periods.

Despite the political shifts at City Hall, their alliance remained strong.

However, the vice mayor raised concerns about his potential return to his previous councilor role if he were to resign, reflecting the uncertainties in the city’s political landscape.

The leadership change began with then-Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia's elevation to mayor following Rama's dismissal over nepotism issues, as found by the Ombudsman.

Hontiveros requested a formal DILG memorandum to clarify this decision, as Rama contested his dismissal, arguing he never received the official notice.

Tensions escalated at City Hall on November 8 when former city administrator Collin Rosell announced Rama's supposed return as mayor after a preventive suspension.

This led to Rosell being arrested for usurpation of authority, highlighting ongoing disputes. Hontiveros visited Rosell at the Waterfront Police Station on the night of the former city official's arrest.(MyTVCebu)
