AN EXECUTIVE of a mining company was suspected of falsifying identity records to present himself as a Filipino.

With this, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) is seeking the cancellation of the Philippine passport of Joseph Sy, whose case is being compared to the controversial Alice Guo.

In a report by Philstar, BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said Sy’s passport could be cancelled after it was found out that he shares the same fingerprints as a Chinese national named Chen Zhong Zhen.

Based on BI records, Chen Zhong Zhen had admitted that he was Joseph Sy.

Appearing before a Senate hearing on Monday, Dec. 15, Sy declined to confirm whether he was Chen Zhong Zhen.

Sy appeared at the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights hearing but refused to directly answer questions from the senators.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros had flagged Sy for allegedly holding both a Chinese passport and a Philippine passport even if China does not allow dual citizenship.

Sy was previously detained by the BI over questions surrounding his identity but was eventually released. The BI insisted that it has strong evidence against Sy and has elevated the matter to the Court of Appeals.

It was Hontiveros who raised suspicions against Sy’s identity during a privilege speech, referring to him as “Alice Guo 2.0.”

Sy had earlier faced a deportation complaint in 2015 insufficient evidence led to his release.(MyTVCebu)
