THE Philippine sports community is mourning the death of a rising volleyball star.
Ike Andrew Barilea of Alas Pilipinas Volleyball Team died in a vehicular accident in Cadiz City, Ngeros Occidenta on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
The accident happened just two days after Barilea celebrated his 21st birthday.
“The court feels emptier and hearts are heavier. Rest easy Alas Ike Barilea,” Alas Pilipinas said in tribute posted on Facebook. “Thank you for the laughter, the memories and the heart you gave to the team. Heaven gained an angel but we lost a piece of ours. Fly high, our deal Alas.”
According to Lt. Mansueto de Jose Jr., deputy chief of the Cadiz City Police Station, Barilea was driving a motorcycle when the incident happened.
De Jose said Barilea siganlled to turn left but a Ceres Bus Liner rear-ended him. The volleybal star was thrown off the motorcycle. He suffered multiple injuries and died in a private hospital.
De Jose said the 44-year-old bus driver admitted having miscalculated that caused him to hit Barilea.
Police said the Vallacar Transit Inc. has extended assistance to the victim’s family.(CCM)
