THE local government of Badian, one of the top tourist destinations in Cebu, has reminded tourism operators and stakeholders to comply with regulated rates for canyoneering activities, aligning with a significant surge in the town’s tourism growth.

The Tourism Office emphasized the importance of adhering to the standard rate of P2,000 per participant, as mandated by Badian Municipal Ordinance No. 11-2022 and Cebu Provincial Ordinance No. 2024-04.

This rate, designed to ensure safety and sustainability, accompanies a remarkable 96 percent increase in tourist arrivals in 2024, with the town welcoming 494,657 visitors compared to 252,200 in 2023.

The office noted that this influx underscores the need to maintain consistent rates for canyoneering, a key tourist attraction in Badian.

The tourism success reflects the collective efforts of the local government, tourism stakeholders, and the community, all working to ensure sustainable and rewarding tourism experiences.

The local government highlighted the increased demand for canyoneering services and the critical role of regulated rates in fostering fairness and sustainability in the tourism sector.

Non-compliance with these rates risks undermining these efforts and impacting the overall fairness of the industry.

Penalties for non-compliance are outlined in Badian Municipal Ordinance No. 11-2022. First offenses carry a P1,000 fine per person, two days of community service (eight hours per day), and a one-month suspension of business permits.

Second offenses incur a P1,500 fine per person, two days of community service, and a two-month suspension. A third offense may result in a P2,500 fine per person and the revocation of business licenses.

Cebu Provincial Ordinance No. 2024-04 imposes further penalties, including imprisonment of up to one year or a fine not exceeding P5,000, or both, depending on the court's discretion.

Violating personnel, such as tour guides and lifeguards, risk losing their accreditations.

The Badian Tourism Office reiterated the need for operators to uphold transparency in pricing and services.

Tourists were also encouraged to book only with licensed operators to help preserve the integrity of the industry.(MyTVCebu)
