AMID mixed reactions from the public, the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu has defended its decision to strictly enforce a dress code for visitors,

The policy, implemented on Tuesday, October 1, outlines guidelines for “proper attire inside the church” with some visitors expressing frustration after being denied entry for not complying with the new rules.

Fr. Jules Almerez, the Basilica's media officer, represented by Ismael Buante, the head of security, said the church had taken steps to inform the public well in advance of the dress code’s strict enforcement.

In an interview on Wednesday, Buante explained that the church conducted a month-long information campaign before the policy took full effect.

“We made sure that everyone was aware of the dress code,” Buante said in Cebuano, adding that the Basilica made hourly announcements after every mass for a month.

“We also posted reminders on various social media platforms to ensure that the message reached as many people as possible,” he said.

The policy has sparked discussions among churchgoers, with some supporting the initiative as a way to maintain respect for the sacred space, while others criticized it as overly restrictive and inconvenient.

During MyTV Cebu’s visit on Wednesday, two tourists from China were advised by candle sellers outside the Basilica not to enter the premises as they were wearing shorts.

Meanwhile, a visiting couple and their daughter from Minglanilla town were barred from entry. They had planned to visit the church for their daughter’s first birthday.

Buante reiterated that the policy was not intended to inconvenience the public but to preserve the solemnity of the church.

Despite the backlash, the Basilica remains firm in its stance and has encouraged visitors to cooperate with the guidelines.

He clarified that the rules would be enforced regardless of race, dismissing speculations that foreigners might be exempt from compliance.

The acceptable attire includes collared blouses with sleeves, knee-length or longer dresses and skirts, polo shirts, t-shirts, and long-sleeve shirts. Jeans, slacks, office wear, and closed shoes or sandals with straps for women are also permitted.

Men are expected to wear closed shoes or slide sandals.

Certain clothing items are strictly prohibited, including sleeveless tops, spaghetti straps, tube tops, short skirts, shorts, low-waist pants, and ripped jeans.

Additionally, hats and caps are not allowed inside the church premises.(MyTVCebu)
