Power rate for the Dec-Jan billing to go down

HOMEOWNERS in Metro Cebu will benefit from a reduced electricity rate this holiday season, with a decrease of P0.68 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

The Visayan Electric said that the adjustment, effective from December to January, lowers the overall residential rate to P11.51/kWh, down from the previous month’s P12.19/kWh, resulting in savings of at least P136 for households consuming 200 kWh.

The power utility company on Monday, December 16, attributed the rate cut to a decline in electricity prices at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), where electricity is traded.

However, the company cautioned consumers against complacency, noting that the holiday season often leads to higher electricity usage, potentially offsetting the savings.

Visayan Electric President and Chief Operating Officer Raul Lucero stressed the importance of managing energy consumption during this time.

He explained that while the rate reduction is a welcome relief, higher electricity usage, due to festive activities, could still result in increased bills.

“Let us not be too complacent with the recent reduction in the electricity rate, as our usage during the holiday season may be unusually high," he said.

He underscored the need for consumers to adopt practical energy-saving measures to avoid surprises in their monthly statements.

Among the common contributors to increased energy usage during the holidays are electronic Christmas decorations, fully-stocked refrigerators, and the frequent use of appliances such as electric fans, air conditioners, and televisions.

To address this, Visayan Electric advised consumers to take simple yet effective steps, such as switching to LED lights for decorations, unplugging appliances when not in use, and setting air conditioners to energy-efficient temperatures.

These measures, Lucero noted, can significantly help reduce overall energy consumption and keep electricity bills manageable during the holiday season.

The company reiterated its commitment to helping consumers optimize their energy use while enjoying the festivities, ensuring both savings and sustainability during one of the busiest times of the year.(MyTVCebu)
