SEN. Grace Poe joined the growing calls for the identification of the individuals who assaulted ‘Tiktok,’ a stray dog in Negros Occidental that was shot with Indian arrows.

Poe appealed to the public to help the local government unit and animal welfare groups to help locate the individuals who were behind the abuse.

Because of the incident that she described as a “barbaric act,” Poe, a fur parent herself, pushed for the immediate passage of the revised Animal Welfare Act.

The revised Act will make barangays more capable in addressing such cases, Poe said.

"The disturbing incident should prompt us to pass the revised Animal Welfare Act that we are pushing to put more teeth in the current law and capacitate the barangay to be more responsive to cases of animal cruelty and neglect," Poe said in a statement.

Poe’s call came after BACH Project PH, a non-profit organization in Bacolod City, rescued ‘TikTok’ with arrows pierced in his body.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) Executive Director Ana Cabrera said they are prepared to assist in filing a case against those who assaulted Tiktok.

A cash reward of P65,000 has been offered to anyone who could help locate the dog’s attacker.

Under Senate Bill 2458, any person found subjecting any animal to cruelty, maltreatment, or any of the prohibited acts under the measure faces a penalty of imprisonment from one year and six months to three years and a fine of not less than P30,000 but not over P100,000.(Mary Grace Fegarido, USJ-R Intern)
