Over 300 vessels to join Fiesta Señor fluvial procession

Over 300 vessels will converge in the Cebu-Mactan Channel on Saturday, January 18, for the highly anticipated early morning seaborne procession, a pivotal event in the 460th Fiesta Señor celebration.

The Philippine Coast Guard-Central Visayas (PCG-7) has confirmed that 305 vessels, including motor bancas, tugboats, yachts, and recreational boats, will join the procession, all sailing in devotion to the image of the Sto. Niño.

The Roro (roll-on roll-of) vessel M/V Sto. Niño-Cebu has been designated as the official galleon to carry the revered image of the Holy Child, continuing the long-standing tradition of reenacting the historic arrival of Ferdinand Magellan’s ship in 1521. The arrival marked the introduction of Christianity to the Philippines, a faith that has since become a cornerstone of the nation’s culture and identity.

The fluvial parade not only serves as a religious ritual but also as a profound symbol of the enduring devotion of Filipino Catholics to the Sto. Niño, connecting the past and present through faith and tradition.

The parade will begin at 6 a.m. from Captain Veloso Port in Lapu-Lapu City and finish at Pier 1 in Cebu City by 8 a.m. It will pass through the Mactan Channel, where participants and spectators will create a sea of devotion and excitement.

To ensure the safety of everyone, vessels will travel at a speed limit of 6 to 8 knots, a rule enforced by the PCG. On January 9, Commodore Weniel Azcuna led a site inspection of critical points along the route to review safety measures and navigational conditions.

The Coast Guard has issued important safety reminders for participants, such as wearing life jackets, not exceeding vessel capacity, and sticking to designated routes.

Other prohibited actions include littering, alcohol consumption, carrying sharp objects or firearms, and swimming near vessels.

PCG Central Cebu Commander Capt. Jerome Lozada has emphasized that violators could face fines and penalties, urging everyone’s cooperation to ensure a smooth and safe procession.

Thousands of spectators are expected to witness this grand display of faith, safety, and unity as vessels carry the image of Sto. Niño through the heart of the Cebu-Mactan Channel, symbolizing the event's spirit.(MyTVCebu)
