THE arrest and turnover of former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court (ICC) was legal, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reiterated.

In a press conference late Tuesday night, March 11, Marcos said the government has an official document explaining why Duterte was arrested.

The President stated that carrying out Duterte's arrest warrant is the country's duty as a democratic leader in the global community.

“We followed every necessary procedure, we had a good basis on which to serve that warrant, and we read him his rights. We followed all the legal procedures that are necessary,” he said in a Philippine Star report.

Marcos added that the arrest was carried out in accordance with the country's obligations to Interpol.

Marcos acknowledged that some might perceive the arrest as politically motivated but asserted that this was not the case.

"I don't see how that can be political persecution on my part because it was initiated before I even came into the picture," Marcos said.(Nikelyn Pahayahay, BiPSU Comm Intern)
