THE sudden sacking of General Nicolas Torre III as Philippine National Police (PNP) chief left some members of the House of Representatives shocked and exasperated.
Akabayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña said the sacking of Torres was surprising.
"Yung mga sangkot sa flood control dapat ang sibakin pero Chief PNP ang tinanggal. Anyare? (Those involved in the flood control [issue] were the ones who should have been axed, and yet the Chief PNP was the one removed. What happened?)" Cendaña, a member of the minority, wrote on X (formerly Twitter.
Another member of the minority bloc, Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima, was also shocked with Torre’s sudden firing.
"What's happening?! They better have a good reason in doing that to a very popular, much appreciated and high-performing PNP Chief!" De Lima said in her own X post.
For Makabayan bloc solons ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio and Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co, the removal of Torre after serving a mere 85 days was "unmistakable evidence of escalating internal conflicts and systemic breakdown within the Marcos administration."
In a report by Manila Bulletin, the Makabayan bloc Torre's open confrontation with Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Remulla regarding unauthorized personnel changes "exposes serious divisions within the administration's law enforcement machinery".
“We urge the Filipino people to look past these internal power struggles and concentrate on pressing concerns," Tinio said in a statement.
