SEN. Imee Marcos is urging Malacañang to release a full and transparent report on the death of Paolo “Paowee” Tantoco, a Rustan Commercial Corporation executive, who was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel in March 2025.

Tantoco, 44, reportedly died of a cocaine overdose at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on March 8, just one day after attending the Manila International Film Festival (MIFF), an event held from March 4 to 7 and supported by the First Lady’s office.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner recently confirmed that the cause of death was “cocaine effects,” with “probable atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease” contributing to the fatality. His death was ruled accidental.

In a strongly worded public statement, Marcos described online reports linking her sister-in-law, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, to the incident as “troubling.” The senator noted claims circulating on various platforms suggesting the First Lady may have been present at or around the time of Tantoco’s death.

According to these allegations, Tantoco was also reportedly part of the First Lady’s entourage during her trip to Los Angeles for MIFF-related engagements.

“More troubling are claims circulating online that the First Lady may have personal knowledge of the circumstances surrounding Mr. Tantoco’s death — with some alleging that she was present at the scene either shortly before, during, or immediately after the incident,” Senator Marcos stated.

While emphasizing that the allegations remain unverified, Senator Marcos called on the Office of the President to proactively address public concerns by issuing a comprehensive report. She also urged the release of information that could verify the First Lady’s whereabouts during the period in question, including data that may be reflected in official records or law enforcement reports.

“Given the gravity of these allegations and the matter’s undeniable public interest, I urge Malacañang to issue a comprehensive report on the circumstances of Mr. Tantoco’s death, including any involvement — direct or indirect — of the First Lady or other Philippine government officials,” the senator said.

Marcos further stressed the importance of transparency in quelling speculation and upholding public trust, especially when high-profile government figures are implicated in sensitive matters.(Edu Sanico Toledo, PIT Comm Intern)
