DAVE Apolinario, a former world title challenger from General Santos City, absorbed an upset knockout loss in Tokyo, Japan, bowing to Chinese LongYi Hu in their non-title super flyweight bout Tuesday, April 22.
Apolinario was totally outclassed in the match that he was supposed to dominate. He had his moments early when he tagged Hu with a left uppercut. Hu wobbled with the hit but was able to survive.
The Chinese fighter asserted himself in the third round, sending the 26-year-old Apolinario to his knees with a right straight followed by another right to the head.
Apolinario survived the blow but found himself in big trouble a few seconds later when he was cornered by Hu.
Hu delivered the final blow by connecting on a solid right hook that floored Apolinario anew.
Apolinario failed to beat the count, sealing the Chinese fighter’s victory with 1:15 left in the third frame.
Losing two of his last three fights, Apolinario dropped to 21W-2L.
Apolinario suffered his first loss when he got knocked out by Mexican Angel Ayala Lardizabal for the vacant world International Boxing Federation lyweight title last year. He bounced back from that defeat by beating Jeny Boy Boca last December only to fall again against Hu.
Hu, on the other hand, secured his ninth win in 11 fights.(CCM)
