JOEY Canoy, a Mindanao-native boxer, is inching closer to realizing his dream of becoming a world champion.

The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has ordered a world title eliminator between Canoy and Chinese boxer DianXing Zhu in the IBF minimumweight division.

The IBF order came just a few days after Canoy scored an impressive unanimous decision win over Ariston Aton on December 27 in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat.

Canoy is one of the current highly rated Filipino boxers as he is ranked No. 5 in the IBF world minimumweight.

Zhu is no pushover as he He is ranked No. 3 in the same division. He is also ranked No. 2 in the World Boxing Organization (WBO).

Should Canoy defeat Zhu, a world title showdown between two Filipino fighters will be going to take place.

The IBF minimumweight title is currently held by Filipino champion Pedro Taduran, who is one of only two active Filipino world champions.

Canoy has 23 wins, 14 by knockout, five losses, and two draws.

The 28-year-old Zhu, who is from Chengdu, China, has 14 wins, 12 by knockout, and has only lose once so far.(CCM)
