IT’S back to serious work for Alex Eala as she starts her campaign in the 2025 Wimbledon Championships in London, England today (Philippine time), July 1.

Marking her second Grand Slam appearance after her stint in the French Open last May, Eala will be tested right away as she will go up against defending champion Barbora Krejcikova.

Krejcikova is a two-time Grand Slam winner and a former world No. 1 in women’s doubles. She is currently No. 16 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

While she is a proven winner, Krejcikova is dealing with some health issues.

Hounded by a right thigh injury, the 29-year-old Czech champion withdrew from both her singles and doubles quarterfinal matches at the recent Lexus Eastbourne Open.

It was in the Eastbourne Open where Eala made history, coming all the way from the qualifiers to make it to the championship round. The amazing run made Eala the first Filipino to appear in the semifinal and final rounds of a WTA Tour-level tournament.

The 20-year-old Eala just fell short of ending the run with a championship after she lost to Australian Maya joint in a thrilling three-set title match.

After the historic run at Eastbourne Open, Eala’s WTA ranking skyrocketed as she moved up to a career-best No. 56.

The Eala-Krejcikova match is set to start at 8:30 p.m. (Philippine time).(CCM)
