Eala moves up to career-high No. 69 in world rankings

FILIPINA tennis sensation Alex Eala will be celebrating her upcoming birthday with an improved Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

rning 20 on Thursday, May 23, Eala is now ranked No. 69 in the world, her highest ranking in what is shaping up to be a stellar career.

Eala’s career-best ranking came a week before her much-awaited debut in the main draw at the French Open. Eala also tried to make it to the main draw in last year’s French Open but faltered in the third qualifying round.

Eala climbed up the rankings despite suffering a first-round exit at the Italian Open last week. Then ranked No. 70 in the world, Eala badly lost to Marta Kostyuk in the first round of the Italian Open, 0-6, 1-6.

Aside from moving up in the snigles, Eala also took a huge leap in the doubles rankings, climbing up from No. 456 to No. 224.

Eala’s huge jump in the doubles rankings was propelled by a decent showing in the Italian Open where she and American partner Coco Gauff reached the quarterfinals.

In her upcoming French Open campaign, Eala will be looking to duplicate her magical run in the Miami Open last March.

Eala’s resounding stint in the Miami Open saw her stun Grand Slam champions Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek en route to a quarterfinal finish.(CCM)
