ALEX Eala and her American partner, Coco Gauff, sustained their hot run in the 2025 Italian Open after they dominated their Italian rivals to move to the quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 13.
The Filipino-American tandem routed the wildcard duo of Tyra Grant and Lisa Pagato, 6-2, 6-3, to keep their title hopes alive in this Women’s Tennis Association (WTA1000) event.
The unseeded Eala and Gauff jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The hometown bets moved within 1-3 but Eala and Gauff won the three of the next four games to win the first set.
The second set was a tight one but the Eala, ranked No. 64, and the No. 3 Gauff, won three straight matches after a 3-3 all standoff.
A tougher test awaits Eala and Gauff in the quarterfinals where they will face Italian third seeds and 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalists Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
Errani and Paolini secured their own quarterfinal seat beating Leylah Fernandez, a Canadian of Filipino descent, and Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
Errani is a former No. 1 doubles player who owns five Grand Slam doubles titles. She and Paolini scored a runner-up finish in last year’s French Open.(CCM)
