THE sudden quiet in Cebu’s business after the recent earthquake does not just signal a pause—it reflects lost wages for workers and stalled operations for local businesses.

To address both, the Department of Labor and Employment-Central Visayas (Dole-7) is providing P11 million in initial assistance for quake victims.

Through its Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (Tupad) program, Director Roy Lloren Buenafe said that they will enroll the victims to the program so they can earn and help businesses rehabilitation.

Dole-7 is prioritizing employees of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), among the most vulnerable sectors affected by the disaster.

Residents from Cebu City are among the initial beneficiaries, with 862 workers set to receive support totaling P5 million.

San Remegio, Medellin, and Bogo City each have 163 residents slated to benefit with P950,000, while Sogod and Daanbantayan each have 81 residents receiving P475,000.

Additionally, 200 residents each in Medellin and Tabogon are scheduled to receive payments totaling P1.002 million per municipality.

“For the first 10 days, they will receive the minimum wage of P540 per day, totaling P5,400,” Buenafe said, underscoring the urgency of providing immediate support.

Through Tupad, displaced workers will clear debris, clean workplaces, and assist in community rehabilitation, helping businesses resume operations and residents regain normalcy.

Dole-7 personnel, led by Cebu Provincial Field Office chief Ma. Teresa Tanquiamco, are already profiling beneficiaries to ensure assistance reaches those who need it most.

The earthquake, which had its epicenter in Bogo City and was considered tectonic in origin, affected thousands of residents.

Dole-7 is coordinating with local government units to confirm beneficiaries and oversee smooth implementation of the program.

The labor department reminded employers that they cannot force employees to report for work when safety is at risk, and absences under such conditions cannot be grounds for suspension or termination.

Affected workers are encouraged to register with Dole personnel in the field to receive timely assistance.

The Tupad program provides emergency employment and livelihood support to those who lost income due to disasters, helping both residents and businesses recover together.(MyTVCebu)
