HOSPITALS across Central Visayas treated hundreds of holiday-related injuries during the New Year celebrations, with road crashes accounting for the majority of the reported cases.

The Department of Health Central Visayas (DOH 7) recorded a total of 347 injury cases during the monitoring period from December 21, 2025, to 6 a.m. on January 1, 2026.

This included 73 fireworks-related injuries and 274 road crash injuries, based on data provided by sentinel and non-sentinel hospitals in the region.

DOH-7 reported 73 fireworks-related injuries, showing an 8 percent decrease from the 79 cases recorded in 2025.

Cebu province had the highest number of injuries, with 27 cases, followed by Cebu City with 20, Lapu-Lapu City with 16, Bohol with 9, and Mandaue City with 1.

The department confirmed there were no cases of fireworks ingestion or stray bullet injuries during this period.

The DOH continues to remind the public to avoid illegal fireworks and follow proper safety protocols.

Additionally, road crash injuries made up the majority of the recorded cases, with DOH 7 adding 26 new cases, bringing the total number of road crash injuries to 274.

Drivers accounted for the highest number of injuries, with 169 cases, followed by rear passengers with 77, pedestrians with 20, and front passengers with 8.

The data reflects the increased risk to both motorists and pedestrians due to heavy traffic during the holiday season.

DOH 7 classified 139 of the cases as collision-related incidents, while 135 were non-collision accidents.

As the New Year begins, DOH 7 urges the public to remain cautious and practice responsible behavior.

The department advises motorists to drive defensively, follow traffic laws, and avoid risky behavior.

It also reminds the public to use fireworks only in designated areas and avoid illegal pyrotechnics.

DOH 7 noted that figures may change as data undergoes reconciliation and validation.(MyTVCebu)
