CHRISTMAS this year may not be merry for several engineers and contractors linked to the flood control corruption scandal, with Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon saying arrests could happen within weeks.
Among those facing possible detention are former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Bulacan district engineers Henry Alcantara, Brice Hernandez and Jaypee Mendoza, along with contractor Sarah Discaya of St. Timothy Corp.
Dizon said they belong to the first batch of individuals charged in connection with fraudulent flood control projects nationwide.
“I think they will all be spending their Christmas in jail,” he said in Filipino over dzBB radio, as quoted by Philstar.
Dizon earlier filed cases before the Office of the Ombudsman for alleged violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, the Government Procurement Reform Act and malversation of public funds.
He said Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla assured him that the initial group of respondents would likely be the first to face jail time.
The secretary expressed confidence in the evidence, citing sworn statements from residents and documents related to a ghost project in Davao Occidental and a substandard structure in La Union.(MyTVCebu)
