LIVING up to its reputation as one of the top executioners in the world, China has executed two men for separate fatal attacks.
A Chinese court first sentenced a man to death after he was found guilty of killing at least 35 people in a car rampage in November last year.
Fan Weiqiu, 62, as found by Zhuhai Intermediate People's Court guilty of "endangering public safety” describing his motives as "extremely vile" with “ruthless” methods after he plowed his car into the people having an exercise outside a sports center in the southern city of Zhuhai.
Fan was arrested by police inside his car while he was trying to cut himself with a knife.
A CNN report said the car rage was believed to be caused by Fan’s failed marriage and unfair divorce settlement.
Fan was executed, three weeks after he was sentenced to death by the court.
The court said during the sentencing that Fan’s “motives were extremely vile, the nature of his crime extremely heinous, the method particularly cruel, and the consequences particularly severe, posing great harm to society.”
Fan’s attack was described as the deadliest attack in the country for a decade.
Aside from Fan, another man identified as Xu Jiajin, 21, also killed eight people after stabbing them in a university in the eastern city of Wuxi, in November.
The stabbing incident occurred just a few days after the car attack that happened in Zhuhai.
State media quoted a police statement that Xu’s action was caused by his failure “to acquire his diploma because of poor exam results.”
Police said that Xu admitted the crime “without hesitation” on November 16. He was sentenced by the court to death on December 17, with the court saying his crime was "extremely serious."
The execution of the two individuals gained massive support on Chinese social media and became the top trending topic in China.
No data as to the number of executions the Chinese government has made, but in a CNN report, it is believed that China is one of the top executioners across the globe.(LAO)
