WHILE thousands of protesters in Manila took to the streets on Friday, January 31, to demand the impeachment and resignation of Vice President Sara Duterte, demonstrators in Cebu went further by also calling for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to step down.

Protesters assembled outside Sto. Rosario Church, where they unveiled a massive banner calling for the resignation of the country’s top officials.

The rally, led by the Clergy and Citizenry for Good Governance (CCGG), focused on issues of corruption and accountability in government.

Sanlakas Cebu Secretary Teody Navea spoke at the gathering, criticizing the ongoing political conflict between the Marcos and Duterte factions.

“The misery and sufferings of the people are being sidelined. The bickering of the Marcoses and the Dutertes are the ones in contention,” Navea told MyTV Cebu.

“There’s no recourse, these corrupt officials must go in these trying times of uncertainty. The Filipino people deserve to be governed by officials with integrity,” he added.

Protesters chanted slogans, raised their fists, and called for justice before eventually dispersing.

When asked which officials should resign, Navea singled out Duterte.

“Mga corrupt officials. Klaro dha c VP Sara. Di lang impeachment ang option para nya (Corrupt officials. It’s clear that VP Sara is one of them. Impeachment is not the only option for her),” he said.

He also explained why Marcos should step down.

“Yes, kay siya ang in command sa pag-approve sa national budget. So, siya ug ang iyang mga kauban nga responsable sa pagmugna sa pinaka-korrupt nga budget (Yes, because he is in command of approving the national budget. So, he and his cohorts are responsible for crafting the most corrupt budget ever),” Navea said.

Navea urged Cebuanos to be proactive in holding government officials accountable.

“Cebuanos must be participatory in various dealings in government. We must be vigilant in monitoring the whole system of governance. We must ensure the accountability of the corrupt officials in government,” he added.

Meanwhile, in Manila, around 4,000 people gathered at the People Power Monument, urging Congress to act on three impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Duterte.

The complaints accuse her of misconduct and misusing public funds—allegations that she has denied.

President Marcos dismissed the impeachment calls as a “storm in a teacup,” urging lawmakers to drop the case, saying it would only divert their attention from legislative work.(MyTVCebu)
