FOR MANY residents in Cebu City’s south district, access to quality healthcare is about to get easier with the opening of a new Super Health Center.
The Cebu City Government has officially received its second Super Health Center, located in Barangay Labangon, during a blessing and turnover ceremony held on Monday, May 5.
Funded by the Department of Health (DOH) with a budget of P9.9 million, the facility is expected to boost access to essential medical services in the city's south district.
Engr. Miguel Gerson, Development Management Officer V of the DOH’s Local Health Support Division, said the health center will now be under the management of the Cebu City Government, which will oversee its staffing and equipment.
In an interview, Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia welcomed the development.
"Malipayon kaayo ko kay naa natay Super Health Center sa South District. Kani turnover pa ni, wala pa ni’y equipment butangan pa ni namo puhon, butangan ug personnel and doctors and nurses. Hopefully, in a few weeks ma-operate na nato," said Garcia.
He added that the city government will complete the staffing and equipment within the month.
Once fully operational, the Labangon Super Health Center will provide a wide range of services including X-ray, ECG, dental care, maternity (paanakan), and mental health support—all covered by PhilHealth.
These services are aimed at easing the burden on hospitals and bringing healthcare closer to residents, especially in densely populated communities.
The Labangon facility is the second of its kind in the city, following the July 2024 opening of the Super Health Center in Barangay Apas. That center now serves 100–200 patients daily.
DOH-7 Regional Director Dr. Jaime Bernadas said the Super Health Centers are part of the department’s push to upgrade all Rural Health Units (RHUs) into facilities that offer a complete package of primary healthcare services.
“Tanan na karong mga RHUs i-convert nato na kumpleto o gitawag nga Super Health Center aron makumpleto ang primary care benefits sa mga ka-igsoonan,” Bernadas said.
A third Super Health Center is also in the pipeline, to be built in Barangay Basak San Nicolas.(TGP)
