ASPIRING basketball players from all over the Visayas will get a chance to further hone their skills as the inaugural season of Visayas G Hoops is set to unfurl soon.
Tournament organizer Rocky Alcoseba described Visayas G Hoops as a tournament dedicated to the development and exposure of basketball grassroots in the Visayas region.
Basketball camps and schools will be testing their mettle in the 13-Under Boys, 15U Boys and 25U Women categories.
Aside from Cebu City-based schools, teams from Taclobcan City, Ormoc City, and Cagayan de Oro City have already expressed their intention to join, Alcoseba said.
“We already have a lot of confirmations. We are just finalizing the opening date because there are schools that are willing to host the tournament,” said Alcoseba, son of the late legendary Cebuano coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba.
Alcoseba said to ensure the quality of games, the number of participating teams will be limited to 20 teams.
“Since it is going to be an inaugural season, we want to limit the number of teams so we can easily troubleshoot if some issues come up,” Alcoseba said.
Alcoseba said making the tournament a Visayas-wide competition augurs well for young basketball players.
“Schools have their basketball programs but through this league, the kids will be exposed to different coaching styles, playing styles. In the long run, this will be advantageous for the players because they will get the needed exposure,” Alcoseba said.
Alcoseba said to ensure a balanced playing field, only teams whose basketball programs are still developing.
“We will not have teams coming from the so-called “big schools”,” said Alcoseba.
Among the early sign-ups from Cebu City are the Cebu Institute of Technology and Benedicto College.
Alcoseba will be assisted by tournament director Reynaldo Cañete and tournament consultant Van Halen Parmis.
Registration fee is pegged at P10,000, inclusive of upper uniforms for 15 players and one coach.
Plaques and certificates will be given to the top three finishers in each category. Champion coaches will receive P5,000 each.
