7 million signatures sought to put anti-dynasty law to a vote

SEVEN million signatures could put the long-delayed push for an anti-political dynasty law before Filipino voters, an effort now backed by Catholic Church leaders.

The “Dapat Isa Lang Movement” has launched a signature campaign seeking at least seven million signatures, or 10 percent of the country’s registered voters, to trigger a national referendum on an anti-dynasty measure.

Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David backed the initiative, pointing to the Constitution’s provision allowing Filipinos to exercise legislative power not only through Congress but also through people’s initiative and referendum.

“Perhaps this is where we need to rediscover another form of People Power. The Constitution reserves legislative power not only to Congress but also to the people through initiative and referendum,” David said in a Philstar report.

Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines president and Lipa Archbishop Gilbert Garcera also issued a pastoral statement supporting the Dapat Isa Lang initiative, describing it as a peaceful, lawful and democratic avenue for Filipinos to pursue the constitutional mandate on political dynasties.

The constitutional provision on political dynasties has yet to be implemented through an enabling law.(MyTVCebu)
