MASSIVE flooding caused by heavy rains in Southern Thailand and neighboring country Malaysia (northern) had killed at least 12 people, leaving thousands of people in evacuation.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that the death toll reached nine in Thailand, while 534, 000 households were affected by heavy flooding caused by the rising water in the past three days, a report by Reuters stated.
Storm warnings remained in place, while emergency responders were already deployed to rescue those who were trapped in their respective homes, unable to cross the flood to secure themselves and proceed to shelter centers provided by the government.
BBC reported that two hospitals were forced to close to prevent floodwaters from damaging their medical facilities.
Videos of rescue operations went viral online, showing emergency responders carrying a baby they rescued from the roof of a home because of the flood water in Sateng Nok District of Yala province.
The Meteorological Department of Thailand has warned of heavy rains since Saturday that can cause flash floods in several areas in southern Thailand.
As the rescue operation continued, the government provided over 200 temporary shelters for the affected residents.
In Malaysia, the number of households impacted 139, 000 residents, with three deaths since Friday, based on the countryโs National Disaster Command Center.
The north-eastern state of Kelantan, which borders Thailand, has been mostly affected by the said flooding, and the number of evacuees account for has reached 63%
Both Thailand and Malaysia, usually experience heavy rains at this time of the year, and having floods is not uncommon.(LAO)
